Casillas del Angel
Not far from Puerto del Rosario, the main road to
Betancuria, stretches the long, drawn-out village of Casillas del Angel. The church of Santa Ana, built in 1781 and not far from the main road, is easy to overlook, but if you stand in front of it on the sleepy main square surrounding by trees, with the school behind you, the massive black façade above the main entrance to the otherwise entirely white building is impressive.
nside
, there are statues of Saint Francis and Saint Dominic, a figure of Mary and of course an image of Saint Anne and a painting of the Last Judgement to round it all off., If you have the time, take a stroll down the wide lanes starting from the church, and past picturesque old clay-coloured farms, some of which are still lived in and well-preserved - a sight worth seeing, particularly in spring, when the almond trees are in blossom. And if you want to get to know local crafts in all their originality, visit the Taller de Artesania, where Doña Catalina Mendez continues the varied work of her mother. In the workshop stands a weaving loom on which rag rugs, bags and scarves are made. In one corner is a pile of palm fibres for cheese moulds, brooms, baskets and huts. There are little models of the agricultural implements formerly used on Fuerteventura, dolls in traditional costume and little clothes guaranteed (!) to be hand embroidered, all attractive gifts to take back home. The Taller de Artesania is at the western end of the village, just before the filling-station. (Where the site begins, turn right following the signs, it is the first house on the left).
